Abstract

The idea of this article sprang from what is known as ‘Cultural Turn’ in Translation studies. This Cultural Turn’ (as opposed to linguistic theories of translation) resulted in the emergence of various approaches and theories such as: Translation as Rewriting, politics of Translation, Translation and Gender and post-colonel Translation theories etc. Ideology, being a powerful component in this Turn, has been one of the pivotal themes in Translation research. Ideology here refers to a cognitive, religious, intellectual, political and/or cultural mind set of the translator that affects his/her translation process and product. Although the complete translation of Quran in Urdu started relatively late (i.e., in the beginning of 19th Century AD) yet its proliferation has  been phenomenal: so far approximately more than 80 complete Urdu translations of Quran have appeared, and the number is increasing because of different religious, social, intellectual and educational reasons.  This article endeavours to analyse selected examples of important and widely read Urdu translations of Quran.  The premise of the analysis is originated in the fact that ideology (with its kinds and shades) does have intentional and/or unintentional imprints on these translations. This leads us towards deciphering factors that play their role in making and shaping a certain ideology of a translator.
